Where we are (well actually I believe all over China), you don't go far without seeing small groups of people breaking out the cards for a game of Chinese Poker (which Jason isn't too bad at mind you) or more the ever popular, Mahjong (which we're both yet to learn).
Often accompanied by the hum of conversation and frequent shrieks of laughter or shock after someone announces the latest piece of gossip, its becomes rather animating to watch (especially if women are involved!) as money gets won or lost or someone realizes she is forgetting her customer at a stall nearby (unless the customer waiting is me that is...).
Here's an interesting quip that I got from our travel bible 'The Lonely Planet' -- some claim (especially the Chinese) that the game of chess was invented in China. While this claim is hard to prove it is true that both Chinese chess (xiangqi) and international chess (guoji xiangqi) are very popular. The Chinese love of gambling extends to numerous forms of card games with Bridge being very popular.
